What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ Disorder or TMD is a condition which affects the ball and socket joint which operates your jaw. It is made up of a disk, ligament and bone. The disk will slide forward as the jaw opens, also guiding the lower jaw to slide forward and stretch the ligament. All of these components must work in harmony in order for the jaw to work comfortably. If your jaw is not working properly then you may hear clicking sounds, experience pain and discomfort. Jaw pain can also extend to other parts of the body including the neck, head (cranium) and whole face.

What treatments are offered for TMJ Dysfunction?

Here at Refresh Dental we offer Botulinum Toxin A and oral appliance therapy to treat TMD. Oral appliance therapy helps to position the jaw in the right way, as well as decrease bruxism (grinding) which can also contribute to TMD. These devices are sometimes called splints, night splints or night guards. These look much like mouthguards although they are specially designed for the treatment of TMJ Disorder and other oral issues.

How does Botulinum Toxin A treatment for TMD work?

Botulinum Toxin A blocks the release of neurotransmitters which are responsible for instigating movement of the joints and muscles. The treatment is generally used when the muscle (masseter muscle in the jaw) is spasming. Here at Refresh Dental we strategically place Botulinum Toxin A in the TMJ muscle so that muscle contraction can be stopped and controlled. With the use of muscle relaxants some patients can achieve a significant decrease in the amount of pain they experience. The paralysis of the muscle caused by the relaxant usually last for three months.

It was an informative and well organised day where delegates heard from a number of speakers including: Dr Daniel Ford from Paediatric Dental Care, who spoke about the incredibly challenging work he and his team perform. Kerry Read, a Physiotherapist shed light on head and neck therapies.

Geraldine Moses, who recently launched a drug info service for the ADA , educated all of us about drug interactions & adverse reactions relating to oral health. Dr John Flutter spoke about Myofunctional Influences on Facial Growth and the Dentition who has had great influence on the growth and development of the face & jaws with the focus of the lecture being the aetiology of malocclusion. Three other speakers also spoke about interesting topics including the latest Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments, meeting challenges of oral health for older people and Holistic dentistry. All up it was a great day. There were eager companies holding trades displays, and we were well fed and looked after by the Sofitel staff.

A fantastic day to mingle with other oral health professionals. Looking forward to the conference next year!

At the beginning of the month Kristina, Hamish and Rebecca attended a Dental Photograghy course conducted by one of the world’s leading Ceramists and Aesthetic-design dentists, Dr Christian Coachman.

Kristina and Hamish then attended a two-day hands-on course with Dr Coachman for Digital Design in Dentistry-it was amazing and yet another reminder of how quickly technology is advancing. We are so priveledged to have access to this and look forward to creating more beautiful smiles and confident people!

– Some of you may have seen our Facebook page and photo of the whole team out to lunch at the Bavarian Beer Restaurant recently. If not, we’ve added it here :) This was taken in our lunch break during one of two days where we attended a Prime Practice course for Team Communications. We all gained a great deal from the course and are implementing great strategies to provide our patients with a professional and happy dental team!

Kim and Kristina attended a fantastic practice management and systems course at The Pullman Hotel Hyde Park Sydney. We learnt so many interesting techniques to improve our current practice systems and enjoyed spending time with some trusted colleagues.
