For your convenience, Refresh Dental Spa has collected some of the most frequently asked questions asked at our Brisbane dental practice.
How do I stop snoring?
We offer snoreguards for snoring and sleep apnoea which correct the position of your jaws and in turn clear your airway. If you do suffer snoring we recommend visiting us for a consultation so that we can evaluate your condition.
When should I bring my child to the dentist?
You should start bringing your child to the dentist during your regular visit to the dentist. This will allow them to slowly get used to all of the sights, smells and sounds of the dentist, which reduces their risk of dental anxiety. You should book their first formal appointment when their first tooth erupts.
How do I protect my teeth as I get older?
Prevention is better than a cause which is why we recommend twice yearly appointments with us as well as a thorough dental hygiene regime. This should include brushing twice and flossing once per day to get rid of all food debris and bacteria. A regular dental appointment also means that if you do develop any problems they will be identified early and not require more serious treatment.
My wisdom teeth are hurting do I need them out?
If your wisdom teeth are hurting it is possible that they may be impacted. We recommend visiting our practice from 17-20 years of age as your wisdom teeth will begin to erupt anytime from 17-25 years of age. We can take a digital OPG x-ray to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted and need removal. If they do require removal then we do provide simple extraction.
How do I stop night grinding and jaw joint pain?
We can provide splints and nightguards for patients who suffer from night grinding and jaw joint pain (TMD/TMJ Dysfunction). These can correct the position of the jaw as well as prevent grinding which can worsen the symptoms of TMD which can include headaches, severe pain and jaw clicking.
How can I prevent tooth decay?
It is vital that you brush and floss your teeth every day. You also need to visit Refresh Dental Spa every six months for a regular appointment where your teeth will be cleaned and evaluated for potential problems. It’s important that you take this precaution as tooth decay can progress and lead to the need for root canal therapy or even induce periodontitis (gum disease).

Why would I need a professional whitening treatment?
When whitening your teeth you must be careful- store bought treatments, while cost effective, may be damaging to your teeth. The outermost layer of your tooth is called the ‘enamel’ and it protects your tooth from bacteria. With professional teeth whitening treatments you can ensure your teeth are being treated safely and effectively. Store purchased products are not always safe for your enamel and could cause damage to your teeth.
Do I have to get my wisdom teeth removed?
Not everyone requires wisdom tooth extraction, sometimes they never erupt or often a patient’s mouth has enough room for them to sit comfortably. However for those patients who have impacted wisdom teeth (they begin erupting without enough space) they will need to have them removed to ensure their remaining teeth are not affected by their eruption.
What can you use a laser for in dentistry?
At Refresh Dental Spa we generally use laser dentistry to treat gummy smiles and gum disease. Periodontitis, which is the most severe form of gum disease, can be treated with our soft tissue laser which eradicates bacteria on application. Laser technology is also able to decrease the size of your gums for those patients who dislike the look of their gummy smiles.
How can you treat my TMD pain?
If you are suffering from pain caused by TMD we can use our dentofacial aesthetics to help treat your muscles that are causing you discomfort from overuse. We also provide bite splints which can be worn while you sleep. This splint is specifically designed to help relieve the stress on your TMJ.
How often do I need to visit my dentist?
At Refresh Dental Spa we recommend our patients visit us every 6 months for a general check-up. However, if you are experiencing pain in between your regular checkups we recommend contacting us as soon as possible to have your dental needs treated.
Why would I need a root canal?
Root canals can save your teeth from complete extraction; the treatment is designed to clean your infected tooth pulp. Our dentists will drill down through the tooth to the infected part of the roots to remove them. We will then clean the area to prevent further infection and follow up by sealing the gap left by the pulp removal.
What is dentofacial aesthetics?
Dentofacial aesthetics is a combination of dental and cosmetic treatment that come together to create a complete smile makeover. At Refresh Dental Spa we offer wrinkle relaxants and dermal fillers in accordance with dental treatment to help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Dentofacial aesthetics is also beneficial for those patients who are suffering from the effects of TMD, our muscle relaxants can often help relax your overused muscles.
What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
There are generally two types of veneers: porcelain and composite. Porcelain veneers are commonly known to be stronger, resist stains and reflect light more effectively. A composite veneer however, is generally quicker to apply and is often the cheaper alternative but is often not as aesthetic or long lasting. At Refresh Dental Spa we are happy to meet the needs of our patients by offering both porcelain and composite resin restorative materials.

Every patient is different and will require a different treatment and plan which will affect the cost of their visit. When you visit for a general appointment or consultation appointment we will discuss the cost and payment options available. Avoiding the dentist because of price concerns can lead to even more dental problems and more costly treatments in the future. By visiting our Brisbane dental practice on a regular basis you could be saving yourself from progressive dental problems and costly treatment.
How long will my treatment take?
Every treatment is different and each patient will require their own individual treatment plan. If my teeth feel fine why would I go to the dentist?
Just because your teeth feel and look healthy doesn’t mean they are! Dental conditions are often silent disorders that show little to no symptoms. However, the longer you leave you teeth uncared for, the more bacteria can spread which could lead to severe problems. Just because you haven’t noticed any dental problems doesn’t mean you don’t have any. To ensure your teeth are free of disease and bacteria we recommend visiting our Brisbane dental practice every six months for a dental check-up.
My last dental experience was terrible, why will this be different?
Your appointment at Refresh Dental Spa will be different because we are different! Our team at Refresh Dental Spa prioritises our patients’ needs first. We listen to our patients and ensure their comfort is addressed first and foremost.
