Facial Injectables

The Pioneers in Facial Injectables & Aesthetic Dentistry

Dento-facial aesthetics is the ultimate cosmetic dentistry as it improves not only your smile, but the face that frames your smile.

Many patients choose to undergo dento-facial aesthetics to make the most out of a cosmetic dental treatment, so that wrinkles, fine lines or thin pursed lips do not distract from the appearance of their smile. If you suffer from any of these problems then the team at Refresh Dental Spa can help you. There are two main treatments involved in dento-facial aesthetics, including dermal fillers and muscle relaxants. However, dentofacial aesthetics takes into account your entire facial appearance, beginning with your smile and gums, and extending to other areas of the face.

Overall improvement is our goal when treating:

  • Crows Feet
  • Bunny Lines
  • Frown Lines
  • Forehead Lines
  • Gummy Smile
  • Orange – Peel Skin
  • Face Slimming
  • Platysma Bands
Muscle Relaxants for Wrinkle prevention

Muscle relaxants are used to prevent static wrinkles (permanent wrinkles) from forming. This occurs when we use our facial muscles to contort creating lines which can develop into permanent lines with overuse. Many people develop permanent lines on their forehead, in between their eyebrows and around their mouth where regular use and expression occurs. Muscle relaxants are designed to reduce the risk of this overuse and formation of wrinkles without sacrificing total movement. Here at Refresh Dental Spa in Brisbane we use muscle relaxants for patients with TMD who actually experience pain from overuse of muscles, as well as patients who want to improve the appearance of their dento-facial (oral and facial) area. The treatment of TMJ disorders, tooth grinding (Bruxism), “gummy smiles” and many other conditions caused by undesired muscle action, can now be made simpler and less invasive through the use of muscle-relaxing injections.

FAQ - Injectable Muscle Relaxants

What are they?

A purified protein which when injected into a muscle leads to a temporary muscular relaxation. Frown lines, worry lines and laughter lines are all caused by the repeated contractions of facial muscles: relaxing these muscles with muscle relaxing injectables is a quick, safe and effective way to smooth and soften many wrinkles.

What will happen during the treatment?

We will undertake a thorough facial analysis and detailed discussion before proposing an appropriate treatment plan. The actual procedure takes just 5-10 mins and involves a small number of injections of muscle relaxant solution directly into the muscle groups causing wrinkling.

How quickly will i notice an effect?

You will be able to return to your normal daily activities immediately following treatment: there will be no visible changes. The full effect of the treatment will develop over the following 2-14 days.

How safe is it?

Muscle Relaxant is considered a very safe medication. It is now approved by medical authorities in over 70 countries worldwide.

What are the side effects?

There may be slight discomfort as the needle enters the skin, and there is the possibility of a small bruise at the site of the injection. There are many myths and horror stories circulating in the media: any concerns you may have will be addressed thoroughly prior to treatment. No long term side-effects have been reported.

Post Treatment Care?

Clients are advised to stay upright and to try to exercise the areas treated for 2-4 hours following the injections. It is important to avoid massaging these areas though: this is to prevent the diffusion of solutions to adjacent muscles.

FAQ - Dermal Filler

What are ‘fillers’ and which areas can be treated?

They are designed to fill out and smooth away lines, wrinkles and folds and to add volume to lips. This is an excellent treatment for nasal labial folds (from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth), smile lines, lip enhancement and facial contouring (such as cheeks and chins).

What will happen during the treatment?

Following a through facial analysis and detailed discussion of the proposed treatment plan, the treatment can be started straight away. The gel is injected into the skin in small amounts with a very fine needle, immediately lifting and smoothing out wrinkles with the natural volume it provides.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment time is approximately 30 minutes.

How quickly will i notice an effect?

The results are instantaneous.

How long will the treatment last?

This will vary from individual to individual. It very much depends on factors such as a person’s age and lifestyle, the structure of the skin, and the degree of correction required. Most clients choose to have a repeat treatment within a year, since the main component of both products (hyaluronic acid) is a natural substance which dissolves over time.

What are the possible side effects?

This is a very safe treatment. The substance is highly biocompatible and biodegradable. A local anesthetic is used to minimise any discomfort at the time of injection. Bruising, redness and some slight swelling at the site of treatment does sometimes occur, although rarely lasts more than a few days.

Post-treatment care

You should not touch the area for at least six hours following treatment. Post operative instructions will be given to you.

The Australasian Academy of Dento-Facial Aesthetics (AADFA) was established in 2010 and is dedicated to advancing the art and science of Aesthetic Dentistry for the benefit of both dental practitioners and the public. Dr Kristina became interested in Dento-facial aesthetics with facial injectables in 2010. She attended the first AADFA course conducted in Australia and was fully qualified in September, 2011.

Over the past two and a half years, Kristina has been a trainer with the company to educate her colleagues in this ever-advancing field. She often travels interstate for “Fundamental” and Advanced (“Further”) courses and feels passionate about this specialty.

Owing to superior knowledge of facial anatomy; daily practical experience dealing with the functional and aesthetic aspect of muscles of the face; and an ability to provide accurate and comfortable injections; Dentists are among the most qualified people to be providing facial injections after attending facial injectables training courses with AADFA.

At Refresh, we are proud to be able to offer these enhancing aesthetic services to our patients with a focus on health, science and refreshing one’s overall facial appearance.
