SPlints and Guards
SOMETIMES GOOD DENTAL HYGIENE IS NOT THE ONLY THING NEEDED TO PROTECT YOUR TEETH.
Oral appliances (or mouth splints and guards) are used to treat several conditions. They are a great solution as they provide gradual improvement or instantaneous protection.
At Refresh Dental Spa, we offer three main types of mouth guards.
Custom Sports Mouthguards
Most cases of tooth injury occur during sport and can result in lengthy and expensive oral restorative treatment.
Many of the most common sporting injuries in Australia relate to the oral area, and these include:
- Chipped, broken or knocked out teeth
- Cut lips, and facial area
- Injuries to the tongue
These injuries can be avoided or minimised by wearing a mouthguard while playing contact sport. At Refresh Dental Spa, we offer custom-made guards to provide the best protection for your teeth.
Not all mouthguards are made the same!
The custom-designed dental mouth guards used by Refresh Dental Spa offer far better protection and comfort over alternatives such as off-the-shelf or take-home sports guard kits.
That is because our sports mouthguards are engineered to accommodate your unique bite and individual needs – such as leaving adequate room for changes in your dentition while undergoing orthodontic work.
Around 40% of the adult population of Australia suffers from snoring – and that doesn’t include loved ones who have to listen to it!
Snoring not only places pressure on the personal relationships of those you live with, but it can also lead to serious health implications such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Oral appliance therapy can be used to minimise and eliminate snoring.
At Refresh Dental Spa, we can provide custom-designed snore guards to reduce snoring and help you and your family have a good night’s sleep. Our snore guards work by opening the airway passage at the back of the throat and preventing your jaw from dropping back during sleep and obstructing the airway.
Splints and Nightguards
Did you know that headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain can be caused by poor alignment of your teeth and jaw?
Grinding and clenching of teeth is called bruxism which can cause cracking and chipping of your tooth enamel leading to uneven wear of your tooth surface. It is a subconscious condition that you may not even be aware of as it mostly occurs during sleep. Your bite force can be up to six times greater than when you are awake, as you have no muscle control.
During your regular oral examinations, one of our team members can check for excess and uneven tooth wear, which may indicate bruxism or tooth misalignment.
A night guard or bite splint can prevent the damage caused by bruxism.
At Refresh Dental Spa, we make these custom-fit night guards or bite splints from high-quality acrylic. They are worn to absorb the force of clenching and grinding – protecting your teeth from further damage.
This treatment can also relieve the soreness in your jaw joints and chewing muscles caused through continual strain while sleeping.
As the cause of bruxism is sometimes attributed to stress, relaxation techniques may help reduce the severity of your condition.
