SPlints and Guards
Custom Sports Mouthguards
At our Brisbane dental practice, we can provide quality mouth guards tailored specifically to you.
Most cases of tooth injury occur during sport and can result in lengthy and expensive oral restorative treatment. Many of the most common sporting injuries in Australia relate to the oral area, and these include:
- Chipped, broken or knocked out teeth
- Cut lips, and facial area
- Injuries to the tongue
These injuries can be avoided or minimised by wearing a mouthguard while playing
Not all mouthguards are made the same!
The custom-designed dental mouth guards that we provide at Refresh Dental Spa offer far better protection and comfort over alternatives such as off the shelf or take home sports guard kits. This is because our sports mouthguards are engineered to accommodate your unique bite, and can be designed to accommodate your individual needs (such as leaving adequate room for changes in your dentition whilst undergoing orthodontic work).
Around 40% of the adult population of Australia suffers from snoring – and this figure does not include the countless family members who lose sleep because of a loved one’s snoring. Snoring does not only place pressure on the personal relationships of those they live with, it can also lead to serious health implications such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Oral appliance therapy can be utilised to minimise and eliminate snoring.
At Refresh Dental Spa, we can provide custom designed snore guards to reduce snoring and help you and your family gain a good night’s sleep. Our snore guards work by opening the airway passage at the back of the throat, and preventing your jaw from dropping back during sleep and obstructing the airway.
Splints and Nightguards
Did you know that headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain can be caused by poor alignment of your teeth and jaw?
Grinding and clenching of teeth is called bruxism that can cause cracking and chipping of your tooth enamel leading to uneven wear of your tooth surface. It is a subconscious condition that you may not even be aware of as it mostly occurs during sleep. Your bite force can be up to six times greater than when you are awake, as you have no muscle control.
During your regular oral examinations, one of our team members can check for excess and uneven tooth wear, which may indicate bruxism or tooth misalignment.
A night guard or bite splint can prevent bruxism.
These custom-fitted night guards or bite splints are made by Refresh Dental Spa from high quality acrylic, and are worn to absorb the force of clenching and grinding – protecting your teeth from further damage. This treatment can also relieve the soreness in your jaw joints and chewing muscles caused through continual strain whilst sleeping.
The cause of bruxism is sometimes attributed to stress; often through relaxation techniques, the severity of the condition can be substantially reduced.
